Here you can see the OpenHIE workflows in action. The Mohawk College team has put together a demonstration system based on the v1.0 OpenHIE workflows. On this page we will guide you through this demo so that you can get a feel for how the different of OpenHIE fit together and what the workflows can do for a particular implementation.

During this demo we will share both patients and their clinical documents to the HIE and fetch these details using a completely separate system. This shows how continuity of care can be achieved between independent systems using the OpenHIE workflows.

OSCAR - Create a patient and share it with the HIE

First we will start by creating a patient and sharing them with the HIE infrastructure. This means that they will get stored in the client registry and their record will be made available to other systems. To begin you will need to log into OSCAR to register the patient:

Once you have logged in click on search in the top bar. You are presented with a search screen as you must search first before creating a patient. Click on the search button. Once the search returns you will now be able to click on the Create Demographic link at the bottom right. Fill in the patients name, tile, DOB, address and gender and click on Add Record once you are done.

Now, choose to view the record that you just created. We want to share this patient with the HIE so click on the Sharing Network link near the bottom left. On the screen that open choose the AeHIN DEMO network and click Enable Sharing. The patient will now be sent to the SHR so that their demographics are shared with other systems.

OSCAR - Add and share clinical documents

Next we will add some clinical document to our patient and share them with the HIE. Navigate to the record of the patient that you just created. You may have to search for them by name. Now click on the Add Document link on the bottom left of their record. Now, choose a document type and enter a title for the document, these may anything that you wish. Next you will need to upload a clinical document to share. OSCAR only support sharing of document of type pdf at this stage so choose a pdf file, choose a document class and click add. Wait for the document to upload.

Next, check the box next to the document that you just uploaded (only document of type pdf have a checkbox) and click on the share button on the bottom right. A new screen will appear where you may choose to add the document to a folder and assign a consent policy. You can leave the folder option blank, but you must choose a consent policy to continue. Choose, 'clinical-staff' as the policy and click 'Send', then 'Confim'. The document will now be uploaded to the HIE and made available via the SHR.

OpenMRS - Patient import

First we will start by importing the patient we created in OSCAR into OpenMRS. This patient was shared with the HIE and is stored in the client registry so we can query the client registry to pull down their demographic details. Login to the point of care system which is this case is OpenMRS

Once logged in click the HIE Patient Search in the header. This will take you to a screen with a few fields to search by. Enter a one or both of your patients names and select their gender. Click search and wait a few seconds and some results should be displayed.

You now have the option to import a patient or view any patient that has already been imported. Choose to import one of these patients and click Import Patient on the patient details page. The patient has now been imported from the Client Registry into the point off care system.

OpenMRS - Fetch shared document from the HIE

While viewing the patient in the point of care system choose the HIE Document tab. Here you will be able to see the documents that are available in the SHR for that patient. From here you may choose to view or import document as you please. You should see the document that you created in OSCAR. Import this document. You should now be able to see the document under the patient's encounters on the dashboard.
